OBJECTIVE
- To encourage students to develop the habit of self-learning on the use of serials collections that may contribute to their intellectual development.
- To introduce the students to the different types of serials collections as supplementary materials for their research.
- To provide library users easy access to information using abstracts and indexes.
WHAT IS A SERIAL?
- A “Serial” is defined as any publication issued in successive parts which are intended to be continued indefinitely. These publications may be issued in print, non-print, and or electronic format.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SERIALS?
PROCEEDINGS

- Proceedings – are the collection of academic papers that are published in the context of an academic conference. They are usually distributed as printed books after the conference has closed. Proceedings contain the papers of the researchers at the conference. They are the written record of the work that is presented to fellow researchers.

NEWSLETTER

- Newsletter – is a regularly distributed publication generally about one topic that is of interest to its subscribers. Newsletters are published by clubs, churches, societies, associations, and businesses, especially companies. This provides information of interest to their members, customers or employees.

NEWSPAPER

- Newspaper – is a written publication containing news, information and advertising, usually printed on low-cost paper called newsprint. It often features articles on political event, crime, business, art/entertainment, society and sports. Most of the papers also feature an editorial page containing columns which express the personal opinion of the writers. Newspapers are often published on a daily or weekly basis. It features weather news and forecasts, a gossip column, a sports section and classified ads.

- Popular magazines – are publications, generally published on a regular schedule, containing a variety of articles.

- Refereed materials are of high quality. The contents, articles and manuscripts included in these publications are reviewed and evaluated by experts. The purpose of this is to protect, maintain and raise the quality of scholarly materials published in serials.

- Includes limited advertisements related to that example : scholarly books or publication subject field
- Terminology used is specific to a subject discipline
- Found in libraries and other academic, medical or scientific settings
- Articles approved by author’s peers of Editorial Boards

- Trade publication – is a periodical, magazine or publication printed with the intention of target marketing to a specific industry or type of trade/business. Trade journals typically contain heavy advertising content focused on the industry in questions with little if any “general audience” advertising..

WHAT ARE INDEXES?
- Article indexes also called periodical indexes) include the citations of articles in magazines, journals and newspapers. Some article indexes contain abstracts or brief summaries of the articles. It is a lists of subject, topics & names arranged alphabetically. It indicates page references in the text publications. Periodical indexes are available in both paper and online formats.

BUSINESS PERIODICAL INDEX

- is a cumulative index to periodicals on accounting, advertising, marketing, agriculture, banking, building, chemical industry, communications, computer technology and applications, drug and cosmetics industries, economics, electronics, finance and other businesses, industries and trades.

WHAT IS AN ABSTRACT?
- It is a summary of a publication or article accompanied by an adequate bibliographical description to enable the publication or articles to be traced.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF ABSTRACTS?
BIOLOGICAL ABSTRACT

- The Biological Abstracts provide references to current research from the biological and biomedical literature. It is a guide to authors organisms and subject related to life sciences.
Author Index
- It is used to locate entries when specific personal or corporate author name is known. Entries are arranged alphabetically, by surname followed by the first name. When no personal author names are given, a corporate name (e.g., UNESCO) with a geographical designation, when available is used.
Organism Index
- It is used to find entries by taxonomic name. It provides hierarchical access to taxonomic names for ease in locating references to related organisms.
Subject Index
- It is used to find entries using significant subject terms (key terms) added by Thomson Scientific indexers. Key terms are arranged alphabetically and are followed by a second list of terms that further define the context of the key terms, such as drug modifiers, major concepts, and other terms.
